چکیده

Thin client compression (TCC) achieves the best compression efficiency for sequences of synthetic images. This paper presents a streaming version of TCC (STCC) that almost fully retains the excellent compression efficiency of the original algorithm. When sending images over low-bandwidth networks, STCC dramatically reduces end-to-end latency by pipelining rows and overlapping the compression, transmission and decompression stages. We describe a streaming boundary tracing algorithm and tree-structured codebook that allow inherently two-dimensional pattern matching and substitution methods to be implemented efficiently in a streaming manner. We found that streaming and pipelining reduce end-to-end latency by up to 40.6% over the original TCC method.

A Server-centric Streaming Model

The current streaming technology is based on a model that a server sends encoded streams and that a client does decoding and rendering in real time. In this model, a client must have a powerful hardware and must have specific decoders to handle various compression algorithms (e.g. MPEG, H-263, etc.). This paper starts with a different assumption: network bandwidth is available so that it is no ...

Thin-Client Computing for Supporting the QoS of Streaming Media in Mobile Devices

Due to the limited resources in thin-clients on mobile devices and the large amount of computation for decoding streaming media, it is not easy to support the QoS of streaming media for thin-client on mobile environment. To solve the problems, the terminal servers would be charged for decoding the streaming media and thin-clients have a role to update only the changed areas in their screen. In ...

A Remote Thin Client System for Real Time Multimedia Streaming Applications

This demo proposes a remote thin client system for real time multimedia streaming over VNC under extremely low bandwidth situations. A remote frame can be split into two parts, i.e. high motion part and low motion part, and transmitted through the Internet from servers to clients according to the proposed hybrid RTP protocol. A Dynamic Image Detection Scheme (DIDS) is proposed to automatically ...

Intelligent Adaptation Framework for Wireless Thin-client Environments

The thin-client architecture has been shown to offer a promising utility for mobile computing. By delivering any application through a single, small footprint client (the thin client) on a mobile device, it is possible to mobilize all applications without the need for building wireless application gateways (e.g., WAP Gateways). To this end, thin-client is very promising. However, for certain ap...

Enhancing Screen Teleconferencing with Streaming SIMD Extensions

These applications most commonly fall into the category of thin client architectures, screen teleconferencing and the recording of demonstration sequences. This paper explores the use of MMXTM and Streaming SIMD Extension (SSE) instructions [11,12] to improve the performance of a hybrid Lempel-Ziv [15] encoding algorithm with temporally seeded history buffer and predictive quarter-static range ...
